Dear Parent/Guardian of CSI Student,
I am extremely excited that your son/daughter has expressed an interest in Forensic Science/CSI. It is a very intriguing course which covers aspects of biology, chemistry and physics as they pertain to criminal investigations. Your child will gain some valuable insight into the scientific process and how it can be used in the real world. However, due to the nature of the course, I would like to inform you of a few things that your child will encounter as he/she participates in Forensic Science/CSI.
Although, this class is not meant to place an emphasis on violent crime, some activities will expose your child to several controversial subjects. These include the following:
No real human blood will be used in the course.
Not only will the student learn about these topics, he or she will have labs to gain hands-on experience. Illegal substances and objects will not be available to the students. However, some graphic demonstrations, pictures, videos and illustrations are included in the class so as to further their understanding of certain topics. It is important to note that to convict criminals; one must first understand the circumstances of criminals, the crimes they commit, and the tools that are used to commit them. This must be done at the crime scenes, in laboratories, jailhouse, and courts.
Finally, a Crime Scene Investigator from Douglas County will provide a special presentation. During the presentation, the law enforcement official may discuss violent crimes, show photos of crime scenes and edited autopsy photos.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Ms. Smith at [email protected] or Mrs. Hill at [email protected].
